Huckleberry is an ordained minister of the Christian Church: Disciples of Christ and previously served as pastor of Howard Park Christian Church in Clarksville, Indiana (an AoP Founding Partner). He is a graduate (with highest honors) from both Western Kentucky University and Lexington Theological Seminary.
Huckleberry is widely known as foundational to the launch of the Academy of Preachers. In fact, he was the first person with whom I consulted after leaving the offices of the Lilly Endowment on June 23, 2008.
He served, first, as Senior Consultant, then as Executive Director, assuming that position in July of 2010. His four-year tenure with the AoP will be remembered as one of grand ideas, great success, and good friendships. He is the editor of both of our books of sermons, A Beautiful Thing and Waking to the Holy (Chalice Press).
His imprint is on every aspect of the Academy of Preachers; whatever success we have in the future will be, in significant measure, a result of his work.
My friendship with Lee Huckleberry goes back to 1991 when I was called to pastor Third Baptist Church of Owensboro, Kentucky. Lee and his family were members of that church, although at the time Lee was a student in the university.
Our friendship was instrumental in his call to the ministry, his enrollment in seminary, and his ordination to the gospel ministry. He and I collaborated for several years on a public radio project called The Meetinghouse: Conversations on Religion and American Life. Our partnership in the launch of the Academy was a natural extension of two decades of friendship.
I love him as a friend, a brother in Christ, a partner in the gospel, and a collaborator in the good work with those who are called to gospel preaching.
The AoP is all about gospel preaching, and I have lamented often how administrative work with the Academy has trumped our older and deeper call to preach the gospel. Lee has now reassumed that glorious role, to preach the unsearchable riches of Jesus Christ.
The people of Park Christian Church in New Albany, Indiana are blessed to have Lee Huckleberry as their pastor. He is both smart as a person and wise as a pastor, articulate as a teacher and compelling as a preacher, steady as a leader and sure as a friend. I pray God’s richest blessings upon Lee and the good people of Park Christian Church.
